The good news is that no previous musical experience is required. In fact, beginners don't start on the bagpipes at all—they begin with a practice chanter, a quiet training instrument designed to teach the essential finger movements and techniques needed for piping success.

Welcome, future piper! Learning the bagpipes is easier than you might think—and a lot of fun. Your first lesson is completely free, giving you the opportunity to experience the instrument and see if piping is right for you.
Getting started is simple. All you need is an inexpensive practice chanter (with reed), a tutor book, and an instructor who is committed to helping you succeed.
The practice chanter is an affordable, easy-to-play instrument that uses a single reed. There's no need to purchase a full set of bagpipes right away. In fact, almost all pipers continue to use a practice chanter throughout their musical journey in learning new tunes and refining technique, thus making it a valuable long-term investment.
With just a small amount of daily practice, you'll begin building the skills needed to play the bagpipes. Lessons are tailored to each student's individual goals, learning style, and pace. Whether you're a child, teenager, or adult, you'll receive patient, personalized instruction in a supportive and enjoyable environment.
I believe in building a strong musical foundation rather than rushing through the learning process. My goal is to ensure that every student develops proper technique, confidence, and a great understanding and appreciation of the instrument. Lessons are scheduled for one hour, but if additional time is needed to fully cover the material, I gladly provide it at no extra cost. Great musicians are developed through consistent guidance, dedication, and time.
What to Expect
Lessons can be scheduled at a day, time, and location that is convenient for you. Weekly one-on-one (in-person) instruction is strongly recommended, especially during the first year.
Training is divided into two phases. During the first phase, students learn all fundamental “fingerwork” techniques, embellishments, and their first several tunes on the practice chanter.
With regular lessons and consistent daily practice, most students are ready to transition to the full bagpipes within 6 to 12 months.
